Foster Care Prayer Vigil

If you care about kids without families, please commit to pray for them. Of course, you don't have to do this as part of any organized effort, but wouldn't it be cool if Christians across the country banded together to go to God in prayer for the foster kids who so desperately need a loving home?

National Foster Care Month

May happens to be National Foster Care Month. Maybe you've noticed some signs popping up in your neighborhood about foster care. Maybe you haven't. In Idaho, I see signs on churches and billboards suggesting that people call 211 to learn more about becoming foster parents.

Coinciding with National Foster Care Month, Cry of the Orphan is organizing a nationwide campaign to get churches and individuals focused on praying for these kids in need. Having fostered three kids and adopted two (the third is in the process), I know firsthand the difference it can make in a life. These kids need Christians to commit to prayer on their behalf, and to rise up and take action to provide homes for them.

Foster Care Prayer Vigil, May 17-24

Foster care prayer vigils will take place all over the country during the week of May 17 - 24. You can organize a prayer meeting with your family and friends yourself, or ask your church to help get a larger one organized. It can be a private meeting in your home, or a public event that is publicized via the local media to get people to join with you in prayer and learn about the need for Christians to open their homes to these vulnerable kids.

If you go to the Foster Care Prayer Vigil website, you will find all kinds of supporting documents to download, and a place to register your prayer meeting to encourage others in this nationwide effort!

Christian foster parenting and adoption

Christian Foster ParentingDid you know there are hundreds of thousands of kids whose "parents" consist of government bureaucracies and courts? As Christians, we have an obligation to care for the kids in our society who, through no fault of their own, do not have a family. Yet tens of thousands of kids slip through the cracks in our nation's foster care systems and end up perpetuating the cycle of bad decision making.

Nearly 2,000 years ago, James made an assertion; that pure religion was caring for the fatherless and widows. Shockingly, pure religion is not about sitting in pews a couple times a week. Meeting with the church is a means to an end: to equip us for acts of service.

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is
this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress..."
James 1:27

Do we Christians believe that? Do YOU believe that?

The Problem

Christians have become complacent. We've bought into the notion that organizations can solve our culture's ills and care for the underrepresented in our society. The truth is, only when love is expressed from family to child can those children without families feel loved and cared for. That takes a commitment by real people to give of themselves and provide a home for a needy child.

The Mission

What if every capable, stable Christian family in the nation stepped up to care for the fatherless and motherless in a tangible, self-sacrificing way? What if the tens of thousands of children in the hundreds of foster care systems around the nation suddenly had loving, caring families? Further, what if the birth parents of those foster kids suddenly had mentors sharing the love of Christ with them in a tangible way?
